A legacy reimagined
The Old Canal Bar & Kitchen stands proudly in the heart of Mountmellick a town shaped by industry, community, and the waterway that once ran through it.
Formerly Turley’s Bar, this landmark premises has been part of local life since 1952. For generations, Turley’s was a place where stories were told, milestones were celebrated, and neighbours gathered. That spirit of warmth and welcome remains at the heart of everything we do.
Our new name honours the Grand Canal that once flowed through Mountmellick, bringing prosperity and connection to the town. Next door stands the historic Lock Master’s House a reminder of the canal’s legacy and the people who kept it moving. Though the canal no longer runs through Mountmellick, its story lives on and so does the sense of community it created.

Proprietor
Barry Liscombe and Joanne Deegan combine award-winning culinary expertise with extensive hospitality and event-management experience. Barry creates approachable, flavourful dishes inspired by local produce and Irish food heritage, while Joanne ensures every guest receives a warm and memorable experience. Together, they have created a welcoming destination for everything from relaxed family lunches and intimate dinners to elegant evenings and large celebrations.

As the kitchen closes each evening, the energy shifts.
From Thursday to Sunday after 9pm, live music fills the bar creating the perfect setting for relaxed drinks, lively gatherings, and weekend celebrations. It’s where great food meets great atmosphere.
